コーティング・塗布中や塗布後に、塗膜の光学特性や保護機能に影響を及ぼす表面欠陥が発生することがよくあります。
代表的な表面欠陥は以下の通り：
基材への濡れ性不良
ハジキ
ベナードセルの形成、浮き
レベリング不良、オレンジピール
気流の影響を受けやすさ
特に、表面張力の差は表面欠陥の形成につながります。表面張力の差は、系そのものに由来するもの（溶剤の蒸発、バインダーの架橋反応）、あるいは外部からのオーバースプレーや 粉塵（基材の汚染）によって生じるものがあります。
このような表面欠陥を避けるために、塗料表面張力に影響を与えたり、表面張力差を最小にしたりする添加剤が使用さ れます。そのような製品は、主にポリシロキサン（シリコーン）系とポリアクリレート（アクリレート添加剤）系です。
