2種類のカーボンブラック分散体の比較（湿潤分散剤ありとなし）。湿潤分散剤なしでは、凝集が強く、大きな凝集塊ができるため隠蔽力がありません。湿潤分散剤ありでは、微細な粒子のため、よく脱凝集解膠し、優れた隠蔽力、高光沢を実現します。
複数の顔料あるいは粒子を混合したとき、顔料が十分に安定していないと分離が発生します。この不具合は色浮き/色分れと呼ばれ、ラブアウト試験（塗料の薄膜の下部分を指でこする）を実施すると色の変化として見ることができます。湿潤分散剤で顔料が安定しており、顔料の分離は発生していません。
